Why Dictionaries Disagree on IPA: From Jones to Wells

Why do Oxford and Cambridge transcribe the same English word differently? Explore the history of IPA, the Jones-Gimson-Wells lineage, and the Upton debate.

Oxford and Cambridge use different IPA symbols for the same English words because they follow rival editorial traditions — one prioritizing phonetic accuracy, the other pedagogical stability — rooted in a debate that began in the 1990s.

If you have ever compared the IPA transcription of the same English word in two different dictionaries, you may have noticed something strange. The Oxford English Dictionary writes "square" as /skwɛː/, while the Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary and the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary write /skweə/. The word "price" appears as /prʌɪs/ in some sources and /praɪs/ in others. Same language, same word, different symbols.

This is not a mistake, and it is not because one dictionary is wrong. It is the visible surface of a hundred-year-old conversation among phoneticians, dictionary editors, and dialectologists about how English should be transcribed. Understanding that conversation makes IPA far more interesting, and far more useful, than any beginner's chart can show.

A small note on terminology before we begin: the abbreviation IPA does double duty. It refers both to the International Phonetic Alphabet, the chart of symbols, and to the International Phonetic Association, the academic body founded in Paris in 1886 that maintains the chart. The two are easy to confuse, and the distinction matters in this story because the Association sets the inventory of possible symbols, but individual editors choose which symbols to apply to a given language.

Why English IPA Looks So Standardized (Until It Doesn't)

Most learners encounter IPA for the first time inside a single dictionary or a single textbook. From that vantage point, the system looks settled and uncontroversial. Every sound has a symbol, every symbol has a sound, end of story.

The reality is messier. The International Phonetic Alphabet itself, as a chart of possible human speech sounds, is genuinely standardized. But the question of which IPA symbols should be used to transcribe English in particular, and especially the prestige accent known as Received Pronunciation (RP), has been debated continuously since the 1910s. Different dictionaries have aligned with different camps in that debate, which is why their transcriptions diverge.

The disagreement is almost never about consonants. Stress marks are not contested either. The fault line runs through the vowels, especially the long vowels and the diphthongs of RP. To see why, we need to walk through the lineage of phoneticians who shaped the system.

The UCL Lineage: Daniel Jones, Gimson, and the Birth of Modern English IPA

The story of English IPA transcription is, for most of the twentieth century, the story of one university department. The Department of Phonetics at University College London produced three successive heads who each redefined how English would be written down phonetically. There is a half-joking saying among phoneticians that captures it: UCL begat Jones, Jones begat Gimson, Gimson begat Wells.

Daniel Jones and the Quantitative Scheme (1917)

Daniel Jones (1881–1967), who became head of phonetics at UCL in 1921 and held the post until 1949, produced the first widely circulated transcription of English in his English Pronouncing Dictionary, published in 1917. Building on earlier work by Henry Sweet and the French phonetician Paul Passy, Jones became the central figure who applied the modern concept of the phoneme, a contrastive unit of sound, systematically to English, and he introduced the vowel trapezium diagram still used in textbooks today. The term "phoneme" itself had earlier roots in nineteenth-century European linguistics, but Jones's work is what brought it into mainstream English-language phonetics.

Jones used what is now called a quantitative scheme. In this system, the difference between the vowel in "ship" and the vowel in "sheep" was marked only by length. Both used the same base symbol /i/, with the longer version getting a length mark: /i/ versus /iː/. The same logic applied to /u/–/uː/, /ɔ/–/ɔː/, and /ə/–/əː/.

The problem with this scheme is that English long and short vowels are not just different lengths of the same sound. The vowel in "ship" is genuinely a different vowel quality from the vowel in "sheep," not merely a shorter version of it. Jones's notation hid that fact, making the actual articulation harder for learners and dialectologists to recover from the page.

Alfred Gimson and the Quantitative-Qualitative Reform (1962)

Alfred Gimson, Jones's student and eventual successor at UCL, addressed this in his 1962 Introduction to the Pronunciation of English. Gimson introduced separate symbols for vowels that differed in quality, while keeping length marks where length still mattered. The shift produced the inventory most learners recognize today:

Notice that "sit" became /ɪ/ rather than short /i/, while "see" stayed as /iː/. The diphthong in "goat" became /əʊ/ rather than the older /ou/ to better reflect the modern Southern British onset. The long central vowel in "bird" got its own symbol /ɜː/ instead of being written as a long schwa /əː/.

This quantitative-qualitative scheme is the foundation of nearly every English IPA transcription you see today, including the one used on IPAtranslator and in our beginner's guide to IPA.

John Wells and the 1990s Consensus

John Wells, a Trinity College Cambridge alumnus who later became Professor of Phonetics at UCL and served as president of the International Phonetic Association from 2003 to 2007, edited the 1990 Longman Pronunciation Dictionary. It was the first major new English pronunciation dictionary since Gimson's 1977 edition. Wells essentially took the Gimson framework, made small updates to reflect late-twentieth-century pronunciation, and codified it as the working consensus.

Three of his updates are worth knowing.

A new pair of symbols, /i/ and /u/ without length marks, was introduced for the vowels at the end of words like "city" /ˈsɪti/ or before another vowel as in "strenuous" /ˈstrenjuəs/. These are neither fully long /iː/ nor fully short /ɪ/, and the bare symbol captures that ambiguity.

The clusters /tju/ and /dju/ in words like "situation" and "dual" were increasingly transcribed as /tʃu/ and /dʒu/ to reflect yod-coalescence, an ongoing change in British pronunciation. So "dual" appears in many modern dictionaries as /ˈdʒuːəl/. More careful or conservative RP, especially in formal speech, still preserves the original /tjuː/ and /djuː/, and learner dictionaries often list both forms.

Syllabic consonants, which Jones and Gimson had marked with a small vertical stroke under the letter (/l̩/, /m̩/, /n̩/), shifted toward the more readable /(ə)l/, /(ə)m/, /(ə)n/ notation common in American transcription.

The Upton Revolt: Oxford Goes Its Own Way

By the mid-1990s the Wells–Gimson consensus looked stable. Then Oxford University Press hired Clive Upton, a dialectologist at the University of Leeds, as their pronunciation consultant. Upton looked at the consensus transcription and decided several symbols were no longer accurate descriptions of how educated British speakers actually talked. The 1995 Concise Oxford Dictionary introduced his revisions, and a quiet but persistent rift opened in the world of English lexicography.

Upton changed five vowels:

Each change reflected a real phonetic observation. The vowel in "dress" had genuinely shifted toward the open-mid /ɛ/ position. The vowel in "cat" had moved away from the older /æ/ toward the more open /a/ for many younger RP speakers. The diphthong in "square" had monophthongized for a substantial portion of speakers into a long /ɛː/. The "price" diphthong showed onset variation that /ʌɪ/ arguably captured better than /aɪ/.

Wells Strikes Back

John Wells published a sharp public response defending the consensus. His arguments were not that Upton's observations were wrong, but that the existing symbols were better choices for practical reasons.

On "dress," Wells conceded the shift had occurred but argued that switching to /ɛ/ would confuse English-as-a-foreign-language students, who might pronounce the onset of the diphthong /eɪ/ in "late" with the same open-mid quality as "let," since both would now share the symbol /ɛ/.

On "cat," Wells pointed out that no equivalent shift had happened in American or Australian English, and changing the British symbol would break what phoneticians call dialectal parallelism, the convention of using the same symbol across dialects when the underlying phoneme corresponds.

On "nurse," Wells argued that /ɜː/ captures a tense, focused quality that distinguishes the vowel from the much more variable schwa /ə/, and that writing it as /əː/ would suggest a long schwa that is not quite the same articulation. On "square," he questioned whether a true monophthong was really the majority pronunciation. On "price," he simply admitted he could not see a clear motivation for /ʌɪ/.

Upton, as a dialectologist by training, had a different priority. He wanted symbols that captured observed variability in real speech, even at the cost of textbook simplicity. Wells, as an editor of a learner's dictionary, prioritized pedagogical stability and cross-dialect consistency. Both positions are defensible. They just answer different questions.

Why This Matters When You Look Up a Word Today

The dispute is not historical trivia. It is the reason that the same English word can show up with two legitimate transcriptions depending on where you look.

The Oxford English Dictionary, including the ongoing third edition, uses Upton's set. So does the Concise Oxford English Dictionary. If you see "square" written as /skwɛː/, "price" written as /prʌɪs/, or "nurse" written as /nəːs/, you are looking at an Oxford-tradition transcription.

The Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary and the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary stay with the Wells–Gimson consensus. You will see /skweə/, /praɪs/, and /nɜːs/ in those sources.

For learners, the practical takeaway is that you should pick one system and stick to it during your active study, but you should not be alarmed when you see the other. Both transcriptions describe the same underlying phoneme; the difference is editorial philosophy, not pronunciation.

Symbols That No Longer Match the Sound

One of the most surprising things about modern English IPA is that several symbols persist even though the sounds they represent have measurably drifted. Phoneticians keep the symbols partly out of tradition and partly because changing them would create more confusion than it solves.

The most cited example is /ʌ/, the vowel in "cut." On the IPA chart, /ʌ/ sits in the back-central region of the vowel space. But experimental phonetics has shown that for most modern Southern British speakers, the vowel in "cut" is produced in the front-central region, much closer to /ɐ/. The symbol on the page no longer matches the position in the mouth, yet it remains universally used because every dictionary, every textbook, and every learner already knows it.

The diphthongs in "mouth" and "price" show similar drift. They are still written /aʊ/ and /aɪ/, but the actual onsets have moved closer to /æʊ/ (starting like the vowel in "cat") and /ɑɪ/ (starting like the vowel in "car") for many younger speakers. Again, the symbols remain because changing them would propagate edits through every dictionary, textbook, and learning app simultaneously.

This gap between symbol and sound is the inevitable price of having a stable written standard for a language whose pronunciation never stops moving. IPA symbols, in this broad style of transcription, label phonemic contrasts rather than precise articulatory targets. Phoneticians live with the gap the way historians live with old place names that no longer describe their geography.

The American Story: A Late Adopter of IPA Transcription

While British transcription was being refined inside UCL and Cambridge, the United States took a different path. American dictionaries relied for decades on respelling systems rather than IPA. The same word "conjugation" might appear as "kon-juh-gey-shuhn" in one dictionary, "kŏn′jə-gā′shən" in another. Each publisher essentially designed its own pronunciation alphabet.

The breakthrough came in 1944, when John S. Kenyon and Thomas A. Knott published A Pronouncing Dictionary of American English with G. & C. Merriam Company. Often referred to simply as "Kenyon and Knott," it was the first American dictionary of major standing to use IPA-style transcription throughout, and for decades it remained the reference for anyone studying General American pronunciation. Wider adoption was still slow, however, and IPA only became standard in American learner-oriented dictionaries toward the end of the twentieth century.

The General American IPA inventory differs from the British one in predictable ways: /r/ is fully pronounced and sometimes written /ɹ/ in narrow transcription, the vowel /ɒ/ in "hot" merges with /ɑː/ for most speakers (the so-called father–bother merger), and the diphthong /əʊ/ in "goat" is replaced by /oʊ/ to reflect the more rounded American onset.

Despite these differences, the two systems are close enough that a learner who knows one can read the other with minor adjustments. This unification is one of the quiet successes of the International Phonetic Association.

What This History Tells Us About Learning IPA Today

The lineage from Jones to Gimson to Wells, with the Upton revolt as a parallel branch, teaches three things that are easy to miss in a beginner's chart.

First, IPA is a living convention, not a fixed code. The symbols you learn today are the result of choices made in the 1910s, refined in the 1960s, and debated in the 1990s. They will continue to evolve. This is not a flaw; it is what allows the system to stay useful as English itself changes.

Second, the symbol is not the sound. /ʌ/ is a label for a phoneme, not a precise instruction for tongue position. When you learn IPA at the level used in dictionaries, you are learning a system of contrasts, not a system of acoustic recipes. Two dictionaries can use different symbols for the same phoneme without disagreeing about how the word is pronounced.

Third, knowing the history makes you a better reader of dictionaries. When you see "square" written /skwɛː/ in one source and /skweə/ in another, you do not need to wonder which is correct. You can recognize the Oxford and the Cambridge traditions and read both with confidence.
