IPAtranslator FAQ

Quick help with choosing a tool and dictionary, understanding results, and finding support.

Choosing and Understanding IPAtranslator

It depends on what you need: the English to IPA converter gives dictionary-form IPA for words and passages, Pronunciation Practice helps you rehearse how a script sounds aloud, the Phonetic Spelling Generator writes pronunciation with familiar letters, and Type IPA lets you type IPA symbols directly.

Use IPA when you need standardized, precise symbols, and phonetic spelling when you want a pronunciation that anyone can read with ordinary letters. On IPAtranslator, phonetic spelling is a letter-based respelling of the dictionary pronunciation: compare the two in the IPA converter and the Phonetic Spelling Generator, or read the full comparison.

No. IPAtranslator shows how English text is pronounced, as IPA or phonetic spelling; it does not translate meaning between languages. To transcribe English text, use the English to IPA converter.

Choose the accent you are learning, teaching, or checking: American for US English, British for UK English. You can switch dictionaries anytime with the dialect control in the converter.

Using IPAtranslator and Getting Support

Results depend on the selected dictionary: if a word is missing with British selected, switch to American in the converter and try again; with American selected, a miss has already checked the British dictionary. Trying a standard alternative spelling can also help, and names and places are not guaranteed to be included.
